Not even modern high-end chips such as the GeForce GTX 1080 can manage decent results in this case, and another problem is that the HUD is not scaled when you exceed Full HD and it is therefore way too small. You should not really think about 3840x2160 pixels. The GeForce GTX 980M is okay for the Medium preset, High will require a GeForce GTX 1060 or GTX 980.
Only top models are powerful enough for Full HD. 1280x720 pixels in combination with the Low preset require at least a GeForce GTX 960M or GTX 870M, 1366x768 pixels and Normal details at least a GeForce GTX 970M or GTX 880M. Decent frame rates are only possible with a high-end chip. Neither a GeForce 940M ( X) nor a GTX 950M managed more than 35 FPS in our benchmark. Notebooks with iGPUs (such as the HD Graphics 4600/ 5600) are not even powerful enough for the lowest settings even dedicated entry-level and mainstream models from Nvidia and AMD are insufficient for “ Mafia 3”. The hardware requirements are absurdly high when you consider the mediocre graphics quality. The game really starts to be fun at 35 to 40 FPS, so we used these numbers for our hardware recommendations as well. Since the sequence always takes place at night due to the staging and the logic and we also closely follow the instructions of the navigation system, the results are pretty steady, even though there can be some variations from one run to another (traffic etc.). “ Mafia 3” does deliver pretty steady FPS numbers and even though we could not determine any serious FPS drops during our testing, you should manage more than the default FPS limit at 30 for smooth gameplay. The benchmark takes about 60 seconds and shows the truck driving in rural as well as metropolitan areas, so a certain performance range is covered. The full drive would take too long, so we stop the measurements with the tool Fraps after the distance marker has reached the value 1500 (see video). The main figure is driving to a heist after a short indoor sequence. We therefore use the initial car drive for our benchmark sequence.
The fact that there is just one save-game and that the game does not support cloud storage (you need a Steam account to activate the game) is not so clever.
